5G: lever of a more efficient and greener digital Europe

5G represents a major leap forward for the telecommunications industry, and one whose surrounding issues and challenges warrant assessment. It will also be a lever of innovation.

The question of this new technology’s social acceptability is being challenged not only by the telecoms industry itself, but also fomenting debates in society – which marks a real departure from previous new generation telecom network rollouts whose issues remained largely in the technological realm.

This is a useful societal debate, and one that deserves clear answers.

This Position Paper is the fruit of an investigative process led by IDATE DigiWorld experts, with contributions from stakeholders from across the telecommunications industry.

It examines:

• The relevance of 5G network deployments from a usage standpoint;
• The issue of the investments required from the industry to be able to provide this technology, in other words the question of putting 5G into place;
• Cross-cutting issues raised by the health and environmental impact of 5G deployments.
